Impact

“A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”

Overview

We are an impactful company because we ensure that patients experience reliability and quality in their diagnostic journey, no matter where they are located. Our impact is deeply rooted in the success of our clients, helping doctors and hospitals become more efficient, reliable, and affordable, while delivering higher quality services to the patients they serve. Medical laboratories are the backbone of a functional healthcare system; when they operate effectively, doctors can make accurate diagnoses and prescribe appropriate treatments. However, when laboratories fall short, the entire health system suffers. We have created an ecosystem designed to help laboratories achieve and maintain the highest quality standards.

Our impact is driven by our strategic positioning within the healthcare system. In a simplified model, a patient's journey progresses through two key stages: the diagnostic stage and the treatment stage. The success of both stages depends on a network of shared services tailored specifically for the healthcare industry, including transportation, communication, financial, logistical, technological, supply-chain, quality assurance, and governance services. Unfortunately, in many developing nations, these essential supporting services are often overlooked, leading to significant dysfunction in the healthcare systems they are meant to support. The Pathology Network addresses this gap by setting up specialised services and systems that enhance the pathology and laboratory diagnostic stage of the patient journey.

The video below offers a closer look at the impact we're making in hospitals, where our systems enable seamless connections to remote pathologists for accurate patient diagnoses.

Key Metrics

The impact of our services on the healthcare system extends beyond a simple 'test and report' and goes further to include quality improvement, turn-around time management and increased efficiency. Clinical & Social Impact

Impact on Patients

Patients seeking care in Kenyan hospitals connected to The Pathology Network experience a range of benefits that positively impact their healthcare, both directly and indirectly. These benefits include reduced diagnostic costs, faster diagnosis, reliable and timely dispatch of results, and consistently high-quality test reports. Here's an example of how The Pathology Network reduces diagnostic costs for patients: There are both direct and indirect costs associated with laboratory diagnostics. Direct costs include the lab test itself, consultation fees, sample collection, and travel expenses to reach a specialized testing facility, which can be significant since many hospitals do not offer advanced testing on-site. Indirect costs encompass lost time due to travel, hospital wait times, and delays in receiving results, which prevent patients from engaging in other activities. Additionally, there is the significant cost of morbidity resulting from delayed diagnosis.

The Pathology Network minimizes the need for patients to travel long distances by bringing advanced diagnostic testing closer to them. Our unique workflow aggregates samples, enabling us to offer affordable test pricing through economies of scale without compromising on quality. Furthermore, our streamlined process reduces turnaround time, allowing patients to begin treatment sooner, which in turn lowers the indirect costs associated with prolonged illness. We are continuously studying the impact of our services on patients to better understand how we can enhance our effectiveness and scale this positive impact to reach millions more in the years to come.

Medical Practice

At The Pathology Network, we bridge the gap between small-town clinicians and remote specialised pathologists—something that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. This connection empowers clinicians to practice medicine at the highest standards, providing them with accurate and timely pathology support for complex surgeries. For example, a urologist can confidently assess the muscle invasiveness of a tumour, or an oncologist can make informed breast cancer treatment decisions based on precise margin assessments - all real scenarios from doctors working outside of Nairobi. These decisions are based on high-quality laboratory services which are essential for making these high-value clinical decisions, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes. This level of expert collaboration, now available even in rural areas, is revolutionizing medical care. Clinicians can now tackle complex cases with confidence, taking on challenges they might have previously referred to larger hospitals, thanks to the robust pathology support we provide. This is the type of impact we are looking to improve on and grow further in the future.

Hospitals are also experiencing the transformative impact of The Pathology Network's services. They can now efficiently plan surgeries and treatments without the delays that once hindered their processes. Previously, slow pathology services forced hospitals to postpone treatments, leaving patients waiting in the hospital or sending them home without immediate care, only to return weeks later for results. With our services, hospitals can now operate faster, more efficiently, and safely—eliminating the need to delay patient care. This streamlined approach aligns with the strategic goals of most hospitals, allowing them to treat more patients within a single month and making the best use of their resources. The resulting reliability enhances their reputation for dependability in the communities they serve and fosters greater trust in the medical system among patients. Additionally, increased efficiency in one department often triggers improvements in other areas, creating a positive ripple effect throughout the entire institution.

Diagnostic Services to Remote Communities

As a health tech company, The Pathology Network is uniquely positioned to take specialised laboratory testing to remote communities that traditional laboratories have long struggled to serve. In Kenya, regions such as Laikipia, Isiolo, Marsabit, and the remote parts of Tharaka-Nithi Counties, have historically been underserved, with minimal investment in diagnostic capacity and healthcare infrastructure. Many residents in these areas face significant challenges in accessing even basic medical services, let alone advanced diagnostic testing, which is often unavailable or requires long, costly journeys to distant hospitals.

Our ability to bring vital diagnostic services to these communities is a powerful example of how technology can bridge gaps and make a tangible difference in people's lives. By delivering high-quality, reliable medical diagnostics directly to underserved populations, we are helping to address health disparities and improve outcomes in some of Kenya's most deprived regions.

Join us in making a difference through our charitable initiative - the Friends of Ayana - together, we can harness the power of technology to transform lives and build healthier communities across Kenya.

Impact through Partnerships

We cannot do it alone. The Pathology Network actively seeks collaborations and welcomes engagement with partners who share our commitment to equitable diagnostic access for patients in Africa. Beyond our operational partnerships with laboratories and pathologists, we engage with government agencies, universities, development organizations, charities, and other institutions to develop innovative and impactful programs that enhance healthcare in individual countries across Africa and beyond. These partnerships are essential in driving the meaningful change we aim to deliver to underserved communities. Below are some examples of recent impactful collaborations which highlight the power of collective effort in transforming healthcare outcomes.

The Ayana Project - Eradicating Cervical Cancer in Kenya

Cervical cancer is a preventable disease. While screening and early detection programmes have successfully eliminated this cancer in certain parts of the world, in Kenya, sadly, it the second leading cause of cancer death causing an estimated nine deaths every day. The Pathology Network is proud to be a key implementing partner of the Ayana Project whose purpose is to eliminate this cancer in Kenya. The Ayana Project is an impact-driven initiative committed to affordably providing high-quality HPV DNA screening to 3.5 million women in Kenya by 2030. This project is a collaboration between Mt. Kenya University, the Kenya Medical Research Institute, and The Pathology Network, aligning with the World Health Organization's global efforts to eliminate cervical cancer. The name 'Ayana,' which means "beautiful flower" in Kiswahili, reflects the project's vision. The project launched 1st June 2024 and will run until 31st December 2030. More information on the Ayana Project can be found on www.hpv.ke

Request for Partnership - Insurance Companies, Gynaecologists, Hospitals, Cancer Centres

The Pathology Network is eager to partner with institutions committed to supporting Kenyan women on their cervical health journey. Health insurance companies, this is an exciting opportunity to transform women's health in Kenya. The current wellness packages offering Pap smears are becoming outdated as the world shifts towards HPV DNA screening, which offers multiple advantages, including the option for self-sampling. Additionally, this screening only needs to be done once every five years, making it a more cost-effective and impactful tool. We are also reaching out to gynaecology clinics and hospitals to partner with us in establishing a robust national pathway of care, particularly for women who test positive for high-risk HPV. Together, we can ensure that every woman in Kenya has access to the highest standards of cervical health care. Interested, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you.

Medical Education and Research

Pathology is the backbone of medicine because understanding disease is the first step in knowing how to treat it. Medical education and research rely heavily on pathologists and laboratory scientists, who not only teach the pathological basis of disease but also support critical research. At The Pathology Network, supporting medical education and research is a mission close to our hearts. We believe that training a doctor impacts generations of patients, and that the benefits of medical research have far-reaching, incalculable effects on society. We're currently exploring how partnerships with local universities and research organizations can better support these vital areas. The video below highlights how The Pathology Network might contribute to advancing medical education through such collaborations.
